Custom Camera Module Design and Integration

Your Guide to Board Camera Customization and Optimization

Whether you're building a smart device, industrial machine, or medical equipment, the right camera module can greatly enhance product performance. This guide walks you through the key factors and processes in customizing your own camera modules.

1. Define Your Requirements

  • Lens Type: Fixed-focus, autofocus, or manual.
  • Sensor: CMOS/CCD based on image quality, price, and availability.
  • Interface: USB, MIPI, or Parallel depending on your application.
  • Board Size: Tailored to fit product dimensions.
  • Resolution: From 0.3MP to 20MP depending on image detail needs.
  • Field of View (FOV): Choose wide-angle or narrow FOV based on use case.

2. Choose the Right Components

  • Sensor Chip: Sony, OmniVision, or Onsemi sensors for specific imaging needs.
  • Lens Mount: S-Mount (M12), CS Mount, or fixed lens holder.
  • IR Filter: IR-cut for daylight use or IR-pass for night vision.
  • Connector: Pin headers, FPC cables, or USB interface board.

3. Evaluate Annual Volume

Custom camera modules usually require a minimum order quantity (MOQ). If your Estimated Annual Usage (EAU) is over 500 units, custom development becomes feasible and cost-effective.

4. Testing & Integration

  • Driver Support: Ensure compatibility with Windows, Linux, or Android.
  • Firmware Tuning: Adjust white balance, exposure, gain, sharpness.
  • Prototyping: Request evaluation samples to test integration.

Laser module structure with diode

Basic Structure - A typical diode laser module includes

  • Laser diode: defines wavelength and power (e.g., 405nm~1550nm).
  • Collimating/Pattern Lens: creates beam focus, lines, or DOE patterns.
  • Driver circuit: ensures stable output (APC/ACC supported).
  • Mechanical housing: determines heat dissipation and alignment.

Types of Laser Modules

  • RGB Laser Modules: Multi-wavelength outputs for visual and alignment systems.
  • IR Laser Modules: 780nm to 1550nm options for sensing, measurement, or invisible beam use.
  • Line/Cross Line Modules: For positioning, machine vision, etc. with selectable angles (e.g., 40°, 60°, 110°).
  • Custom Modules: Tailored optics, modulation, mechanical and thermal specs.

Essential Techniques and Technologies

  • Active Alignment: This process is crucial for high-performance camera modules and laser inspection. It utilizes real-time closed-loop feedback to adjust the X-Y center, Z focus, and sensor tilt (rotation) to achieve optimal image quality and accurate measurements.
  • Cleanroom Assembly: Performed in a controlled environment to prevent contamination, and sensitive components are typically protected against ESD (electrostatic discharge).
  • Power Budgeting: Analysis of light power loss at interfaces (fibers, connectors, chip) to ensure that the optical signal emitted by the transmitter reaches the receiver with sufficient strength for accurate detection, often needing a negative budget correction.
  • Testing and Inspection: This is generally divided into characteristic verification and function test, used for assembly verification and quality inspection. Test objects include optical components, transmitters (light sources), transmission media (waveguides/fibers), and receivers (detectors).
  • Parameter Setting and Calibration: Because optical measurements are highly sensitive to temperature changes, alignment errors, and sensitivity tolerances, accurate calibration ensures that test results are accurate, consistent, repeatable, and compliant with standards.

We leverage our mature design and manufacturing advantages to help customers successfully apply customized embedded computer control boards, embedded systems, and optoelectronic products to various large-scale customized projects, including AI cameras, AI industrial robots, autonomous mobile robots, AI inspection systems, smart POS systems, smart bedside care and entertainment systems, and AIOT applications.
